Luke Shaw suffered a suspected broken leg for Manchester United in their Champions League opener.
Playing in the group stages of the competition for the first time, Shaw was tackled by Hector Moreno early in the first half and went down in clear pain.
Pictures showed his leg in an unnatural position, and the defender was stretchered off clutching an oxygen mask.
Thousands took to Twitter to express their best wishes for Shaw and sadness at his poor luck, and he quickly took to social media at his first opportunity to thank everybody for their messages.
Thank you everyone for your messages , words can't describe how gutted I am , my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger.— Luke Shaw (@LukeShaw23) September 15, 2015
Among those to express their sadness at his injury was teammate Adnan Januzaj, who is currently on loan at German side Borussia Dortmund.
Horrible to see what happened I wish u all the best my brother and stay strong you will comeback even stronger @LukeShaw23— Adnan Januzaj (@adnanjanuzaj) September 15, 2015
To make matters worse, from a footballing perspective, Shaw's tackler Hector Moreno was not sent off, and went onto equalise Memphis Depay's opener late in the first half.
Shaw had been in outstanding form for United early in the season, and the blow is a tough one for the team to take as well as him personally.
