On this day: Rio Ferdinand returned to Leeds United for the first time

Remember this? Rio had the last laugh...

Remember the 2002/03 season? We'd just had the World Cup, Glenn Hoddle was managing Spurs and Rio Ferdinand broke the British transfer record and became the then most expensive defender in the world when he moved from Leeds to Manchester United.

Now, it's safe to say as rivalries go, Leeds and Man United aren't exactly best mates, in fact, you could say they absolutely hate each other! So when Ferdinand decided to cross the Pennines, he faced the wrath of most of Yorkshire after leaving for their rivals.

When the fixture list was released, we're guessing pretty much every Leeds fan went nuts when they saw that they would be playing Man United at Elland Road on September 14th...13 years on we reckon Ferdinand is still remembering how loud all the Leeds fans were.

After a pretty raucous 66 minutes, Harry Kewell managed to send 39,000 Leeds fans into raptures by not only making Rio look like a fool but nodding home a vital header.

With Leeds 1-0 up, they took no time in having some cheeky digs at former employee, with thousands of fans asking 'Rio, what's the score!'.

While Man United went on to win the Premier League title by 5 points, Leeds ending up finishing 15th and with all sorts of financial problems which resulted in them getting relegated the following season.
