McClaren’s comments give a clear indication on future of linked-away Newcastle duo

Mike Williamson has been linked with Leeds United, while Yoan Gouffran is reportedly wanted by Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough.

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren has told The Shields Gazette that he does not plan to send out any of his first-team players on loan.

“No, we’re not,” McClaren told The Shields Gazette when asked if he was looking to loan anyone out. “I think our squad is OK. You know, if you get injuries and things (they will be needed).

“I also think we’ve got cup competitions. We used the cup last time very well for the squad, and we’re looking also to the next game to use it very well for the squad.

“We’ve got a good squad, a strong squad, and we’ve got motivation. They can see a game ahead, and they can see the team is not established yet.”

Mike Williamson and Yoan Gouffran to stay at Newcastle United?

McClaren’s comments suggest that both Mike Williamson and Yoan Gouffran will remain at Newcastle until January at least.

Defender Williamson and winger Gouffran have been linked with moves away from St. James’ Park on loan.

According to The Chronicle, West Yorkshire outfit Leeds United are interested in Williamson, while The Daily Star reports that Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford want him.

The Daily Star has also reported of Hull City, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest’s interest in 29-year-old winger Gouffran.

Neither Williamson nor Gouffran is going to get too many minutes at Newcastle as things stand, but it makes sense for McClaren to keep hold of the duo in case there are injuries.
