Noel Whelan has called for Leeds United to give Lee Erwin at least a spot on the bench.
The former Leeds striker told BBC Radio Leeds on in the post-game broadcast on Saturday after the side's 1-1 draw with Brentford that the summer signing deserves an opportunity.
Erwin did not even make the squad, and Whelan would like to see him more involved under head coach Uwe Rosler, and believes he should take Souleymane Doukara's place on the bench.
He said: "I'm not sure I could put him on the wing, he's a striker for me. I'd like to see him on the bench instead of Doukara."
After playing regularly in pre-season, Souleymane Doukara has barely been used this time around. He has come off the bench just twice, playing a total of five minutes.
Doukara found in the second half of last season he frequently did not make the bench. In pre-season he was given starts out wide on the wing, a temporary solution before Stuart Dallas was signed, but the extra option he gives could be what is keeping him in the squad instead of Erwin.
Rosler did however suggest Erwin is part of his thoughts, later telling BBC Radio Leeds: "No, no, he's pushing. For me, I had to make a decision about putting another striker on the bench or taking another midfielder. Because of the problem with Alex Mowatt, I took two midfielders."
