The England international has given Mauricio Pochettino food for thought after his first appearance of the season.
The 24-year old came on for summer signing Son Heung-min in the 62nd minute and was impressive during his brief stint.
His pace and willingness to take on his full-back added a new dimension to Mauricio Pochettino’s team and several pin-point crosses caused panic in the Black Cats box.
The England international kept it simple on Twitter after his long-awaited return, writing:
Townsend's cameo will have pleased his manager no end and after starting the season looking woefully light in attack, Spurs now appear to have ample options.
Christian Eriksen, Moussa Dembele, Clinton N’Jie and Alex Pritchard are all still to return, and when Tottenham’s attacking players are all fit, Pochettino has no shortage of variety and depth available.
Cup competitions begin in earnest this month and utilising his squad will become crucial for the Spurs boss. He now appears to have the tools to do so effectively, with the squad leaner but more compatible with his philosophy than the the rag-tag bunch last season.
