100% interceptions won: Micah Richards impresses in Aston Villa loss

Micah Richards

The defender put in an impressive performance in a number of areas despite the 3-2 loss to Leicester City.

When Micah Richards joined Aston Villa on a free transfer this summer, many considered it a coup by manager Tim Sherwood.

The Villains had been lacking in a reliable central defender for several seasons, and having lost Ron Vlaar this summer as well, they were desperate for an addition in that department.

Richards is also keen to impress having been touted as a future England regular when he broke through at City but failing to ever become what his potential had shown.

He has had an impressive start as well, and while his side were unfortunate losers against Leicester City on Sunday, he put in an impressive defensive display to show how important he is to Sherwood’s side.

First and foremost Richards had an excellent day when it came to duels with the Foxes forwards, winning nine and losing just one, a success rate of 90%. Aerial duels took a similar turn, as he won all of his six aerial duels, enjoying a 100% success rate on the day.

When it came to clearing the ball he also enjoyed success, with nine of his eleven clearances effective ones, a success rate of 81%. Headed clearances were equally successful, with three of his four proving successful, a success rate of 75%.

Richards was also on form when it came to intercepting the ball, enjoying a success rate of 100% in this area.

Finally, playing the ball has become a big part of the defender’s game, and Richards was also impressive in this, as he enjoyed an 86% pass success rate throughout the game.

An impressive performance from Micah Richards then, whose performance was a clear demonstration of his growing importance in the side, and potentially that several big sides may rue missing out on his signature this summer.
