Spurs player ratings: Mason the star - but some old friends outshine Son

Nathan Baker and Ryan Mason

How Tottenham Hotspur's stars rated during a narrow 1-0 win over Sunderland.

Hugo Lloris - 6.5/10

Solid if not spectacular. The only time the Frenchman was beaten, Jermain Defoe fluffed his lines and hit the post.

Ben Davies - 6/10

Got forward a lot with plenty of good runs. His end product was disappointing, though.

Jan Vertonghen - 6/10

A quiet afternoon for the Belgian, with the Tottenham defence easily split open at times - but going unpunished in the end.

Toby Alderweireld - 6/10

Vertonghen's partner at the heart of the defence also got forward a lot but was the culprit as Defoe sped past him, being caught completely flat footed.

Kyle Walker - 6/10

Worked well with Ryan Mason on occasion but this was a quiet game for the right-back.

Eric Dier - 7.5/10

Another fine performance from one of Tottenham's driving forces. Won good tackles and was equally important in the final third.

Ryan Mason - 8/10

Could be accused of being very Joe Allenesque in the early stages, playing simple passes just for the sake of playing them. But the 24-year-old grew into the game more and more as the Spurs playmaker and ultimately broke through with a fine run to score the winner.

Dele Alli - 7/10

A fine effort from the youngster, who fought well to win plenty of free-kicks - showing big improvement with his strength. Certainly not Tottenham's best player but coped with his first start well.

Heung-Min Son - 6.5/10

Produced good free-kick deliveries and linked up well with the likes of Davies and Alli. At one point, the winger also ran the whole length of pitch but couldn’t finish. A positive debut but Son looks rough around the edges and will need time to adjust.

Nacer Chadli - 5/10

A poor performance from the wide man, just as some of his team-mates upped their game.

Harry Kane - 6/10

The man who enjoyed so much success with England recently tried to get into game but found it very tough when closed down by all Sunderland's defenders.

Andros Townsend - 7.5/10

A real puzzle as the 24-year-old was great after coming on! The Tottenham man made a big difference and beat his man on several occasions. Does the winger now mean business or was this another flash-in-the-pan performance?

Erik Lamela - 7/10

Provided a delicious assist for Mason's goal. Another surprise performer, with the familiar face outshining Son on his debut along with Townsend.

Tom Carroll also replaced Mason late on after he was injured celebrating his goal.
