Cristiano Ronaldo was back to his best for Real Madrid in La Liga, scoring five in a 6-0 win over Espanyol that sent Twitter into meltdown.
It would appear that, this season, Cristiano Ronaldo goals are a bit like buses. You wait a while for one and then five come at once.
Already assured of his place as a Real Madrid legend, the Portuguese forward wrote his name into the Galacticos' history books with another memorable haul that appeared all too easy for the former Manchester United man.
Not that anyone on Twitter was complaining, with a raft of comments coming from fans, stats men, players and pundits alike who banded together to celebrate the wonder of Ronaldo and his record-breaking haul.
Going into the game away at Espanyol, the omens had looks good for CR7.

And as the game kicked off, Ronaldo soon took control, with a blistering early glut of goals. Not that everyone was surprised...

But by the time he had notched up five, fans could only watch on and laugh...
One guy even had a great idea for a drinking game...

Nothing, just Ronaldo.— ٨٧ (@Pov_7) September 12, 2015
More importantly, in scoring five goals, Ronaldo had not only beaten Raul's record...

...he'd, in the words of Richard Keys, absolutely smashed it.

So the tributes began to flow. With everything from the obvious...

...to the more cartoonish.
The statistics certainly backed up the feeling that it had been an extraordinary performance from CR7.

And let's not forget the fact that Ronaldo had scored five goals in one game...for the second time in 2015.

That was only the half of it though...
Ronaldo is 3rd player with 5 goals in La Liga away match after Merodio (11 Jan 1959, Athletic) and Peternac (19 May 1996, Vallodolid). #CR7— Infostrada Sports (@InfostradaLive) September 12, 2015
More importantly, the stats weren't the only ones that talked, with plenty of pundits getting in on the action.
One Match of the Day presenter with a penchant for La Liga had this to say on the subject...
I see Ronaldo's slightly sluggish start to the season continues. He only managed to score 5 times at Espanyol.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) September 12, 2015
While a popular Spanish football writer also found the funny side to proceedings...
Pah! That Ronaldo is rubbish.... Misses great chance for his, erm, sixth of the game— Sid Lowe (@sidlowe) September 12, 2015
Manchester United fans, though, may not want to read this next tweet...
Don't want to depress #mufc fans watching Fellaini up front today, but Ronaldo has scored five for Real Madrid this afternoon...— Mark Ogden (@MOgdenTelegraph) September 12, 2015
And there was also room for a tongue-in-cheek explanation to the return to form in front of goal, with Bleacher Report citing a troll-ish tweet from San Marino.
After scoring their first away goal in 14 years this week, they had teased Ronaldo about his goal haul in September. That didn't last long.
Cristiano Ronaldo now has five goals. Credit to San Marino for sparking this goal outburst. pic.twitter.com/xnz5h7hkfl— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) September 12, 2015
This wasn't the only slightly silly tweet on the subject though with a Messi-inspired effort, the pick of the bunch...

But we'll give the final word to this effort, which made us giggle plenty.
