The Italian media have claimed that the North Londoners wanted the 27-year-old on transfer deadline day.
The North London side were embroiled in a tug-of-war for West Brom forward Saido Berahino in the final hours of the window, but it appears that Spurs had eyes on other targets also.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men were clearly eager to bolster their options in the final third, but failed to bring anyone to White Hart Lane in the last days of the window.
TMW claim that Ilicic was in Spurs’ sights, but the Stadio Artemio Franchi outfit were keen to hold onto the versatile 27-year-old.
Since signing from Palermo in 2013, the Slovenia international has been in and out of the Viola starting XI, with the left-footed attacker only starting 17 Serie A games for his club last season.
Despite this, Ilicic has started both of Fiorentina’s games this term and looks to be part of the Florence-based side’s plans for the foreseeable future.
Spurs have added the likes of Son Heung-min and Clinton N’Jie to their attacking ranks in the off-season, but there are concerns over a lack of proven number nines in the squad.
