Tim Sherwood lays down the gauntlet for Aston Villa winger Carles Gil

The Aston Villa player has been told to score more goals...but he needs more chances on the pitch first!

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has been speaking to the club’s official website about his expectations regarding Carles Gil this season.

The 22-year-old right winger barely featured under Sherwood last season despite looking impressive in his early outings for the club, and this season he has played just 22 minutes in the top flight, along with the Capital One Cup match against Notts County.

Despite those brief appearances it appears Sherwood sees Gil having a big role to play at Villa Park this season and beyond, provided he adds to the single goal he has managed for the club so far.

“With Christian (Benteke) leaving we need to find goals from other areas,” Sherwood told avfc.com.

“Jack Grealish and Carles Gil need to start chipping in with goals.”

That is all well and good, but while Grealish has featured regularly under Sherwood Gil has had to bide his time, so the first thing the Spaniard needs is a prolonged run in the side.

Once that has happened, Gil has already shown he has the innate talent to be a huge hit in the Premier League – and a regular scorer and creator for Villa.

Many Villa fans already love the tricky winger despite his limited chances to shine, but could they be about to see his emergence in the months ahead?

Sherwood appears to be hoping that is the case…but he has just as big a role to play in Gil's development as the player does.
