Liverpool fans react on Twitter to reports Fellaini will start up front for Manchester United

Former Everton ace Marouane Fellaini could start up front for Manchester United against Liverpool.

Wayne Rooney is expected to miss Manchester United's big clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

England's all time leading goalscorer will undergo a late fitness test ahead of the 5.30pm kick off, after suffering a hamstring problem, report The Mail.

The Mail claims that rather than big money signing Anthony Martial, United will start Marouane Fellaini up front.

The situation is hardly ideal for United, and illustrates their unsatisfactory transfer window, with Martial bought as a player for the future rather than one who can be counted upon to make an immediate impact.

Marouane Fellaini playing up front may seem comical given his clumsiness, but he is not the sort of player typical defenders are likely to relish playing against, particularly ones who are low on confidence like Dejan Lovren.

The Croatian gifted West Ham a goal in Liverpool's last game, a 3-0 home loss, and lining him up against Fellaini, who would surely gravitate towards him rather than Martin Skrtel, could be a recipe for disaster.

Brendan Rodgers could look to respond in kind, by bringing in the more physical Mamadou Sakho to partner Skrtel, and ensure Fellaini has a tough time imposing his powerful and awkward frame.

With Rooney likely not to be fully fit at any rate, there is a strong start Fellaini features up front as a substitute for a large part of the game even if the England striker does get the start.

Fellaini has had success against Liverpool in the past, finding the net against them in Merseyside derbies for Everton. Last season at Old Trafford he even played the last five minutes as a striker and looked bright - with the game already won - and now it seems Louis van Gaal is ready to be bolder and give him more playing time to create a nuisance of himself.

Here is a look at how Liverpool fans reacted on Twitter to the reports...
