The MOTD presenter was in good spirits on Twitter this afternoon.
Everton defeated reigning Premier League champions Chelsea at Goodison Park this afternoon in a 3-1 romp. The man of the moment was undoubtedly Steven Naismith. The Scot scored a perfect hat-trick, despite only coming on to the pitch after Mo Besic had to be withdrawn because of injury.
However, the big subplot to the fixture was the performance of John Stones against a team he wanted to join this summer. Chelsea had numerous bids for the young England international rejected this summer and the former Barnsley player even handed in a transfer request.
But Everton stood firm, kept hold of Stones, and reaped the rewards earlier today.
The defender was outstanding, first at centre-back and then at right-back after Seamus Coleman picked up an injury.
It was a performance which would have had Jose Mourinho purring with discontent, after failing to get his man this summer.
One man who did find the funny side of it was Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker. The former England international, who scored 38 goals in 52 games in a one-season stint with Everton early in his playing career, sent out this Tweet during the game:
No wonder John Stones was so keen to stay at Everton.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) September 12, 2015
Based on today’s evidence, Stones seems to be in the right place for now.
