The Toffees swept aside the reigning champions at Goodison Park.
Everton have romped to victory against the Premier League champions today, thrashing the out of sorts Chelsea 3-1 at Goodison Park. It was a tremendous display from The Toffees who were full deserving of their win.
They had super-sub Steven Naismith to thank for the win. He came on for the injured Muhammed Besic early in the first-half before going on to score the perfect hat-trick for the home side.
Despite a wonderstrike from Nemanja Matic for Chelsea, Everton did enough to win the game and continue their impressive start to the season.
After the game Roberto Martinez was obviously delighted. Speaking to the press and the Everton Twitter account after the game he praised the ‘arrogant’ football that Everton played and the performance of John Stones – who had of course been heavily linked with Chelsea this summer:
RM: "We restricted Chelsea to two shots on target in 90 minutes. We were arrogant in our football, but we can still play better." #EFCvCHE— Everton (@Everton) September 12, 2015
RM: "If we can perform with that focus and mentality, we are a team that can compete with anyone. We need to be consistent." #EFCvCHE— Everton (@Everton) September 12, 2015
RM: "To keep a clean sheet in the second half is down to the psychology of the group." #EFCvCHE— Everton (@Everton) September 12, 2015
RM: "John has been heavily tested but it was never in doubt that he would perform well." #EFCvCHE— Everton (@Everton) September 12, 2015
Stones performance was yet another testament to the boy’s mentality. The England international was imperious at the back and at times cocky enough to dribble the ball out of danger when others would aim for row Z.
All in all this was without doubt a highly satisfying win for Martinez and his men, as they proved to Stones and any doubters that they can mix it with Chelsea this season.
