The 30-year-old has made a strong start to his United career.
When asked which club had pulled off the best capture, Keown suggested United’s acquisition of the German international was the pick of the bunch.
“I think Bastian Schweinsteiger was magnificent for Germany against Scotland and could have a big impact,” he said.
“He is already a top player and could turn out to be a fantastic signing for United. He has a real hallmark of quality about him and can run games from midfield.
“He may not be a long-term solution but he could be a top signing,” he added.
The former Bayern Munich star has made a solid start to life in England and despite question marks over whether he would be suited physically to the Premier League, he hasn’t looked at all out of place.
Schweinsteiger has featured in every one of United’s six games so far this season and looks to have manager Louis van Gaal’s full backing.
Competition in central midfield is tough at Old Trafford - with an embarrassment of riches boasting the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick - making Schweinsteiger’s emergence all the more impressive.
He will, of course, be hoping to maintain the high standards that he has set throughout his distinguished career so far on Saturday when he gets his first taste of a United-Liverpool encounter - with there rarely any quarter given in the middle of the park when two fierce rivals lock horns.
