Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Sherwood's Ilori comments

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood is amazed Liverpool let Tiago Ilori leave with an option to buy,

Tim Sherwood spoke at his press conference this week, grinning even more than usual.

The reason? He cannot believe his luck that he managed to bring in Tiago Ilori on transfer deadline day, and not only that - but Villa have an option to buy the Liverpool player full time.

The Reds signed Ilori two seasons ago but have failed to try and integrate him into the team, instead shipping him off on loan abroad.

Now they stand to lose Ilori's services without giving him a single minute of Premier League action.

Aston Villa boss Sherwood was quoted by The Mirror: "I would never have taken him if it was just a loan. I have no interest in developing players for other clubs. But with the opportunity to sign him at the end of it was too good to turn down. I was surprised we had an opportunity to take him.

“It is a no brainer for us. We can take him on trial for a year to see if he can be that player I think he can. It is a great deal for this football club because we have the option to buy."

For Liverpool fans, the overriding feeling is this could be a terrible mistake on the part of manager Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers was manager when Ilori was signed, yet has not sought to bring him through, even though he is in his third successive season at the club.

Ilori won rave reviews in the summer for Portugal's under-21 side, when he dominated England's Harry Kane when the two players came up against each other.

Big money Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren continues to make mistakes and underwhelm, so Ilori potentially had a path to the first team if Rodgers was open to it.

Here is a look at the reaction to Sherwood's comments from Liverpool supporters...

Reading the sherwood quotes on ilori makes u think what he could've done for our defence if he was given a chance like gomez was. #LFC
