Tim Sherwood spoke at his press conference this week, grinning even more than usual.
The reason? He cannot believe his luck that he managed to bring in Tiago Ilori on transfer deadline day, and not only that - but Villa have an option to buy the Liverpool player full time.
The Reds signed Ilori two seasons ago but have failed to try and integrate him into the team, instead shipping him off on loan abroad.
Now they stand to lose Ilori's services without giving him a single minute of Premier League action.
Aston Villa boss Sherwood was quoted by The Mirror: "I would never have taken him if it was just a loan. I have no interest in developing players for other clubs. But with the opportunity to sign him at the end of it was too good to turn down. I was surprised we had an opportunity to take him.
“It is a no brainer for us. We can take him on trial for a year to see if he can be that player I think he can. It is a great deal for this football club because we have the option to buy."
For Liverpool fans, the overriding feeling is this could be a terrible mistake on the part of manager Brendan Rodgers.
Rodgers was manager when Ilori was signed, yet has not sought to bring him through, even though he is in his third successive season at the club.
Ilori won rave reviews in the summer for Portugal's under-21 side, when he dominated England's Harry Kane when the two players came up against each other.
Big money Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren continues to make mistakes and underwhelm, so Ilori potentially had a path to the first team if Rodgers was open to it.
Here is a look at the reaction to Sherwood's comments from Liverpool supporters...
Tim Sherwood saying today signing Ilori a "no-brainer" - what does that say about BR? #YNWA— Ryan Walters (@wallbrican) September 11, 2015
Ilori is gonna end up a permanent villa player next season isn't he— JG12 ❤️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (@Shannxo) September 11, 2015
Reading the sherwood quotes on ilori makes u think what he could've done for our defence if he was given a chance like gomez was. #LFC
Looks like Ilori won't be returning to Anfield, although this is the man who said Benteke was going nowhere. https://t.co/8AYG2RVKoR— LFC Round Up (@LFCroundup) September 10, 2015
Still pissed off about ilori having a option to buy at the end of the season. Stupid- He just needed a loan in the prem to prove himself— Anfield Base (@Anfield_Base) September 10, 2015
I was surprised we had the opportunity to take Ilori, says Sherwood. We all were, Tim.— He Saw Red (@HeSawRed) September 10, 2015
@LFCZA if Brendan's key quality and lfc set up is based on improving players development then they have failed markovic and ilori!— Jay (@JayLim79) September 10, 2015
Sherwood has been mocking Brendan Rodgers twice. First, he thinks Benteke doesn't suit LFC. Now, Ilori http://t.co/fRPuNkeWQY FFS.— Clancy (@clancyclancy9) September 10, 2015
Not a fan of Tim Sherwood being smarter than Brendan Rodgers again. Illori should have never even been available— Sam Waninger (@s_waninger) September 10, 2015
I'm sure Tim Sherwood has worked more with Tiago Ilori in one week than Rodgers did in 3 years— The30Duke (@DUKELFC) September 10, 2015
