Aston Villa should have sold Philippe Senderos in summer transfer window

Philippe Senderos is not part of Aston Villa’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Aston Villa were quite busy in the summer transfer window, signing the likes of Micah Richards, Idrissa Gueye, Jordan Amavi and Jordan Ayew.

There were departures from Villa Park as well, with Andreas Weimann, Ron Vlaar, Fabian Delph and Christian Benteke among those to leave.

One player who remains on the books of Villa is former Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos, and it is a surprise.

The 30-year-old centre-back, who joined the Premier League side in the summer of 2014, struggled with injuries last season, but he did not play badly when called upon.

In eight Premier League appearances for the Villans during the 2014-15 campaign, Senderos made seven tackles, 48 clearances and nine interceptions, won six headers, and had a pass accuracy of 82%.

Now fully fit, the former Arsenal star does not seem to be in the plans of manager Tim Sherwood, who has left the Switzerland international out of his 25-man Premier League squad.

Sherwood clearly does not fancy Senderos, which makes it even more bewildering to think that Villa did not sell him in the summer transfer window.

Eurosport claimed in the summer that Turkish outfit Rizespor showed interest in the 30-year-old, but nothing materialised in the end.

Perhaps it was a lack of offers that forced Villa to keep Senderos on their books, but couldn’t the club have tried to negotiate a release with the defender?

As things stand, Villa are paying wages to a player who is not going to be playing any role for them in the Premier League.
