Roberto Martinez discusses whether Everton are planning to sign any free agents

Everton are not planning to sign any more players before January.

Speaking to the Daily Post, Everton boss Roberto Martinez has admitted that he has no plans to sign any players before the January transfer window, with free agents still on the market.

When asked whether he would be looking at utilising the free agent market, Martinez said: “No. The squad is closed from our point of view and I am delighted with the numbers. And I feel we have enough talent in the squad to face that period so clearly we are not going to be looking for any other players.”

The Toffees have a fairly similar squad from last season, with their most important signings coming in midfield. Tom Cleverley, Gerard Deulofeu and Aaron Lennon were the big arrivals, whilst Ramiro Funes Mori adds defensive cover. Leandro Rodriguez and David Henen are both strikers, but are not expected to make an immediate impact.

There is one area where Martinez failed to bring in any more players, with the number 10 role currently lacking in a consistent playmaker. Steven Naismith has played out of position in that role, whilst Ross Barkley is brilliant, but fails to deliver every week.

This failure to bring in another playmaker has seen the Merseyside outfit linked with bringing a player in on a free transfer, with the Liverpool Echo claiming Yoann Gourcuff was on Martinez’s radar.

However, Martinez has downplayed such rumours, and it appears as if the Toffees’ squad will be the same until at least January, when the transfer window opens again.
