Report: Australian international and former Liverpool youngster Brad Smith on trial at Barnsley

The left-back rejected a deal at Liverpool last season.

Liverpool certainly had high hopes for attacking left-back Brad Smith. In October last year Liverpool recalled Smith from a loan spell at Swindon Town with the hope of getting him to sign a long-term deal at the club.

Brendan Rodgers was a fan of the Australian international and was clearly hopeful he would commit his long-term future to Liverpool.

However, it would appear that was not a strategy the young man wanted to follow. He is now a free agent after his contract with Liverpool came to an end this summer. The 21-year-old left Liverpool with one senior appearance to his name, in a 2-1 loss to Chelsea in December 2013.

Now Smith looks to have another team interested in his services.

The former Liverpool man, who has been on international duty with the Australia Under-23 side this month, has been on trial with League One side Barnsley – according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

He is said to be returning to continue his trial spell at the club on Monday after his international duties came to an end.

In an international left-back Barnsley would be getting a great buy and Liverpool will certainly be keeping tabs on a player who rejected a long-term deal at Anfield less than a year ago.
