According to BBC Sport, Manchester United have opened talks with goalkeeper David de Gea and his agent Jorge Mendes over a new contract.
The Spanish international, 24, has won the Fans' and Players' Player of the Year for the last two seasons, establishing himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League.
However, speculation has surrounded his future all summer. The former Atletico Madrid star has been touted for a move to Real Madrid for months now, and it seemed that just over a week ago, De Gea would be making the move back to the Spanish capital.
As reported by Sky Sports, Madrid had agreed a deal to send money plus goalkeeper Keylor Navas to Old Trafford for De Gea, but they dramatically missed the transfer deadline, leaving De Gea in Manchester.
With just one year left on his contract, many have now worried that De Gea will leave the Red Devils on a free transfer next summer - and United are taking steps to prevent that.
BBC Sport suggest that United and De Gea's agent Jorge Mendes have held talks over a contract extension to keep the star shot stopper at United for years to come - though the more cynical supporters will wonder whether such an agreement would include a release clause, enabling him to join Madrid next summer.
United fans are generally happy with the report though, suggesting that chief executive Ed Woodward deserves major praise if they can tie De Gea to a new deal, labelling the move United's best deal of the summer.
Here are some of the reactions from United fans on Twitter after the reports of a potential contract extension for De Gea...
Our best summer business is getting De Gea to sign a new deal cause with him we can challenge for all the trophies #MUFC— Lord Sogifted (@sogifted86) September 10, 2015
Dave signing a new deal would be great news. At least it protects us for the future. Would be great to have him back in goal as well. #MUFC— Rich Lee (@RichLee2202) September 10, 2015
Need to put a massive release clause in this new contract. Least if De Gea goes next summer, we get decent money for him. #Mufc— Ben Carter (@BenC1406) September 10, 2015
Would be amazing if DDG signs a new deal hopefully a 3/4 year extension #mufc— Joe Nicholson (@JoeNic8) September 10, 2015
Even if there's a release clause in the new contract - it doesn't matter. A new contract for De Gea would put this mess behind us. #MUFC— Teec (@Teecus90) September 10, 2015
