The Villa goalie has been talking about his career this week.
The USA number one was talking to FIFA.com about his time with the United States national team when he had glowing praise for keepers at Tottenham, Leicester City and, at his current club, Aston Villa.
“As I get older I try to build off experiences from different goalkeepers that I’ve worked with. I’ve been very fortunate to work with some of America’s best: Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller, Tim Howard. I’ve also worked with Shay Given (at Aston Villa), whose resume speaks for itself.
“I try to pick their brains and examine their tendencies to see if what works for them also works for me. I try to mould myself and foster my own style, but with an added influence from the goalkeepers I’ve learned from.”
Guzan is currently the number one goalie for the USMNT after Everton stopper Tim Howard decided to take a year out from the international game after his FIFA World Cup heroics in Brazil last summer.
This was the first time both were available for the USA and Guzan got the nod. He spoke about his current role and was certainly pleased to be the man between the sticks for USA:
“We have a mutual respect for each other,” Guzan said. “We understand only one guy can play. The fact that Tim’s come back into the national team picture doesn’t change anything for me."
“Now to have the backing of the manager, being the so-called No1 that level [of] excitement is even higher. I want to be the guy that’s counted on and depended on. I want to be involved in the big games.”
Guzan had a difficult end to last season, losing his place in the Aston Villa starting XI. But he has come back strong and is back to being the undisputed number one at Villa Park – even if the club do continually get linked with other names.
For now he will be hoping that he can maintain his number one spot for both club and country. Villa fans will hope that gives him the confidence to perform at his frightening best.
