With the Manchester United man surpassing Bobby Robson as England's all-time top scorer the Football Association has compiled his five best ever strikes.
England's 2-0 victory over Switzerland at Wembley was a largely inconsequential affair but for one very special milestone.
In scoring the second of the Three Lions' goals to help Roy Hodgson's team maintain the only 100 per cent record left in Euro 2016 qualifying, Wayne Rooney also became England's outright all-time top scorer.
Surpassing Bobby Charlton as the national team's top marksmen the occasion also served as the perfect excuse to showcase some of the Manchester United striker's best goals on the international stage.
So the brains at the Football Association have done exactly that with a top five that could surprise in places.
5. Minnow Magic
Things kick-off with a memorable finish for the Three Lions in a comfortable World Cup qualifying win over Andorra at Wembley in June 2009.
Producing the perfect side foot volley finish from a fine Glen Johnson cross, it's a goal that would have been unstoppable regardless of the opposition.
4. Danish Delight
Next up, at number four, came a notable goal during a friendly encounter with Denmark at Old Trafford in November 2003.
Showing plenty of the pace and dogged determination that typified Rooney's early England career, though he benefits from some fortune bounces the Three Lions favourite still nets with aplomb.
3. A cool finish
At three it's another friendly effort, this time in a memorable drubbing of Iceland at the City of Manchester stadium in June 2004.
A precise, yet powerful strike from range, it's a goal that provided the perfect confidence boost for Rooney ahead of arguably his first and arguably best international tournament to date – Euro 2004.
2. Russian roulette
Coming in at two is an often forgotten effort from Rooney against Russia that came as part of Steve McClaren's doomed stint in charge of the national team for the qualifying stages of Euro 2008.
England would go on to lose the game 2-1 but Rooney's consummate chest and volley combo is worthy of second viewing even if the end result went against the Three Lions.
1. A Selecao sensation
The number one spot, meanwhile, goes to the Manchester United star's memorable effort in another friendly, this time against Brazil at the Maracana, in June 2013.
A curling, top corner finish from outside the box, the goal stands tall alongside John Barnes memorable solo effort against the Selecao in the 1980s as one of the best goals ever scored against the Samba Boys.
It certainly merited inclusion in this countdown but, with four of the top five selected coming in friendlies there is certainly something of a pattern to Rooney's goalscoring exploits on the international scene.
Will that change at Euro 2016 in France?
