Report suggests two tactical changes Steve McClaren will make against West Ham

St James Park

Newcastle take on West Ham when the Premier League returns this weekend.

The Magpies face West Ham on Monday night, and a report in the Chronicle claims that Steve McClaren is ready to shake up his tactical set-up following the loss of Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Serbian forward Mitrovic is currently suspended having received a red card in the defeat to Arsenal, leaving McClaren to alter his attacking ranks.

Mitrovic is clear first-choice striker, and although Papiss Cisse can still be called upon, the report claims that McClaren is ready to give roles to both Ayoze Perez and Siem de Jong.

Both De Jong and Perez have so far played limited roles this season, but they are understood to be at the forefront of the head coach’s thinking for the trip to the Boleyn Ground.

Perez proved his goalscoring credentials last term with the Magpies, and McClaren is said to be impressed by his attitude and work rate despite finding himself on the fringes of the first-team set-up.

De Jong has still shown little of what he can do at St James’ Park due to his frightfully unfortunate season last year, when injury kept him out for nearly the entire campaign. McClaren is keen to ease him back into the side, having played just 12 minutes of Premier League action so far.

It is believed that De Jong could be named in the number 10 position, playing just off of Perez as the lone forward. This means Georginio Wijnaldum can drop deeper into his more natural box-to-box midfield role.
