Liverpool should have sold Jose Enrique in summer transfer window

Jose Enrique has just one year left on his current contract with Liverpool.

Jose Enrique has been on the books of Liverpool since 2011, and he is set to remain at Anfield for one more season at least.

The Spanish defender’s current contract with the Premier League outfit runs out next summer, and the Reds are set to lose him on a free.

That situation could have been avoided had Liverpool moved him on this summer.

Enrique could well be a given a new contract or sold in the January transfer window, but it would have been best for the Merseyside outfit had they done the business now.

The 29-year-old left-back has lost his place in Brendan Rodgers’s starting line-up, and it does not look likely that he will regain it anytime soon due to the presence of Alberto Moreno.

Last season, Enrique could feature in only four Premier League matches, while injuries restricted him to only eight league appearances during the 2013-14 campaign.

The former Newcastle United left-back has essentially lost two years of his career, and it would have made sense for Liverpool to sell him this summer and get some money for him.
