Vlad Chiriches was sold by Tottenham in the summer.
Vlad Chiriches was sold by Tottenham Hotspur after two unsuccessful seasons at the club.
He signed with Italian side Napoli, and made his debut before the international break, playing the entire game in a surprise 2-1 loss to Sassuolo - a game in which he was booked just 18 minutes in.
He has recently been with his national squad, and Romanian legend Gheorghe Hagi has been talking him up.
He told Radio CRC, reported by Tuttomercatoweb: "The former Tottenham player can defend well and build the game from the back. Chiriches is really a good defender, not many know him, he can defend and at the same time set up the game. I love it."
Chiriches was one of the players signed by Franco Baldini in 2013, with Spurs beating competition from Italian clubs to his signature.
A separate Tuttomercatoweb article this week suggested Chiriches should never have gone to the north London side, with a succession of head coaches failing to get him playing to his potential.
Discussing his best position, they commented: "(It was a) dilemma that Pochettino, nor Sherwood or Villas-Boas managed to solve. Hence the desire for a change, the offer of Napoli and the arrival in Serie A. [It was] probably the right choice from the start."
Chiriches has 32 caps for Romania, and made 41 appearances for Spurs over two seasons. His problem is that at 27, he should be approaching his peak, not struggling to live up to the hype.
He has a fresh start, but if he fails in Italy then a return to his homeland where at least he remains revered, is his most likely option.
