Gallery: Harry Kane scores again, as Wayne Rooney beats England goal record against Switzerland

Tottenham, Manchester United, Everton and Liverpool stars all turned out for England.

England secured an historic victory yesterday, all-but guaranteeing the top spot in their European qualifying group.

Harry Kane opened the scoring after coming on a a second half substitute, whilst Wayne Rooney broke Bobby Charlton’s long-standing England goalscoring record.

The Manchester United captain netted his 50th goal for the Three Lions, firing a penalty in as the game was drawing to a close.

The performance was not a memorable one, but the game will go down in the memory as the day when Rooney finally broke the goal record, and it will be a long time before anyone else comes close to reaching his tally.

With a flawless record in qualifying so far, excitement is building for the finals tournament next summer, when Roy Hodgson’s squad will be expected to challenge in the latter stages.

They cannot be much worse than they were at the World Cup last summer, and Hodgson looks to have built a functional squad, which whilst not full of stars, possess talent and depth all throughout the squad.
