England stars react on Twitter after Rooney's record-breaking goal, including Harry Kane

Wayne Rooney became England's highest ever goalscorer on Tuesday.

England defeated Switzerland 2-0 on Tuesday night to maintain their 100% record in qualifying for Euro 2016 - but the game will be remembered for Wayne Rooney's record-breaking goal.

Harry Kane opened the scoring for England in the second half, before Rooney converted a penalty to become England's all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing Bobby Charlton as he moved on to 50 goals for the Three Lions.

The Manchester United forward, 29, has been heavily criticised so far this season due to his disappointing displays under Louis van Gaal.

Yet now, Rooney is the nation's hero after breaking Charlton's goalscoring record - and with years left in him yet, Rooney could yet push on to 60 or even 70 goals for England.

After the game, a host of Rooney's England team-mates took to Twitter in order to congratulate him for achieving such a momentous feat.

Jack Butland, Gary Cahill, Nathaniel Clyne, Theo Walcott, Raheem Sterling and the aforementioned Kane all passed on messages to Rooney following his historical goal at Wembley.

Here are some of the reactions from England players after Rooney's record-breaking goal in the 2-0 win over Switzerland...
