Who have been Newcastle United's most clinical, creative and defensively sound performers so far?

Statistically, who have been Newcastle United's top performers so far this season?

Newcastle United have made a slightly underwhelming start to the 2015/16 Premier League season under Steve McClaren. With just two points taken from a possible 12 in their opening four games, the Magpies find themselves just one place off the foot off the table - a position they are available to avoid due to their superior goal difference over local rivals Sunderland.

Throughout the following article, HITC Sport analyse the club's top performers from the first few weeks of the new campaign:

Most clinical: Considering Newcastle have only netted on two occasions this season, there are few competing for the title of the club's 'most clinical' player. However, summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum, who has averaged 0.75 shots per appearance this term, narrowly edges Papiss Cisse to the accolade, having converted 33% of his total attempts.

PositionTotal Shots per AppShot Conversion (%)Total GoalsAppearances
Georginio Wijnaldum MF 0.75 33 1 4
Papiss Demba Cissé FW 1 25 1 4

Most creative: Somewhat surprisingly, midfielder Gabriel Obertan emerges as the club's most creative player from the opening weeks of the new campaign. Having made three appearances - totalling 241 minutes - the 26-year-old has fashioned one key pass per game, including one assist.

  PositionKey Passes per AppTotal AssistsAppearances
Gabriel Obertan MF 1 1 3
Georginio Wijnaldum MF 1 0 4
Moussa Sissoko MF 0.67 0 3

Most influential defensively: In terms of the player who has weighed in most defensively - regaining possession for the Magpies most often - it is summer signing Chancel Mbemba. Throughout his opening four appearances for the London club, the Congo international has averaged 3.25 tackles and two interceptions per game.

Massadio Haidara DF 4.75 1.75 3 4
Jack Colback MF 3.75 2 1.75 4

Most accomplished distributor: Having averaged 33.75 successful passes per appearance, while completing 90% of his total attempts to find a team-mate, Jack Colback goes down on paper as the club's most accomplished distributor of the ball throughout the season so far. The midfielder is renowned for his passing ability and he is clearly excelling for the Magpies in this key area.
