NFL’s first female coach defends decision to join Floyd Mayweather entourage

Jen Welter broke barriers when she joined the Arizona Cardinals staff earlier this year for pre-season, becoming the first woman to coach in the NFL.

Her latest venture has won her rather less praise though.

On Monday, news emerged she would be part of Floyd Mayweather’s entourage when the boxer walks out for his fight on 12 September in Las Vegas. Welter’s decision immediately drew criticism as Mayweather has a long history of domestic violence against women.

However Welter, who holds a PhD in psychology, responded on Twitter, by saying that meeting with Mayweather would be an opportunity to engage with the champion.

Welter will be in what some would consider less that exalted company if she does join Mayweather this weekend. Others to have walked out with Mayweather include Justin Bieber and the Burger King mascot.
