Scotland could not overcome the World Champions at Hampden Park on Monday evening, falling to a 3-2 loss.
It was a spirited performance by Gordon Strachan’s men, but sees the Tartan Army now unable to finish in the top two of group D, and secure the automatic qualification that entails.
They are also behind the Republic of Ireland in the search for the play-off places, and the Scots have it all to do if they want to reach the finals of Euro 2016 next summer.
Whilst certain players put in impressive performances for the Scots, there were also some underperforming stars - and one of them came as no surprise.
It is hard to remember the last time Alan Hutton put in a great performance for either club or country, yet he is still seemingly Strachan’s first-choice pick for the right-full-back position.
The 30-year-old has made just two appearances for Villa this term, having seen himself pushed out of the team, and it is clear he does not have the quality to still be playing at the top level of the game.
Often caught out of position, the former Spurs and Nottingham Forest man offered little defensively, and although he was willing to get up the field to support the attack, his final ball is wasted every time he tries to play a cross.
Hutton’s performance did little to suggest that he is working his way back to top form, and fans took to Twitter to express their disbelief that the Villa man is still playing regular international football.
Next Scotland qualifying campaign we need a new back 4. Hutton and Whittaker can't be the best options for right-back surely!— Colin Byiers (@ColinByiers) September 8, 2015
someone explain how Alan Hutton even has a footballing career never mind playing fur the national team, as bad as ours is— JB (@Glaekit_) September 7, 2015
Hutton is so consistently bad for Scotland; is he really our best option in that position?— ♚ King Jobbie ♚ (@kingjobbie) September 7, 2015
@paddypower the fact that Alan Hutton has not also been mentioned as being terrible is a disservice to how bad he is— Graeme (@daftpenguin) September 7, 2015
Alan Hutton is absolutely shocking. His movement, reading of the game, defending, attacking. The lot. Pish.— Liam Briggs (@LiamBriggs__) September 7, 2015
@Robbo260311 Mulgrew is shocking, Hutton dire, Forrest invisible... And we cannae keep the ball. Ah well— Graham Fitzpatrick (@gwfitzpatrick) September 7, 2015
How many Scotland players didnt turn up this week, Mulgrew hopeless, Brown hopeless, Hutton hopeless, Morrison hopeless, Maloney hopeless— Inside The SPFL (@AgentScotland) September 7, 2015
Scotland are average to poor. I don't want to hear excuses I want the likes of Fletcher Ritchie Hutton and Martin to be gone for good— Grumpy Scottish Man (@BruceHosie) September 7, 2015
