Two Everton teenagers have caught the eye of the club's under-21 coach.
Callum Lees and Jamie Mellen both made their debuts for Everton’s under-21s in the Lancashire Senior Cup match against Preston North End and after Unsworth’s side ran out 3-0 winners the teenage duo received praise from their boss that bodes well for the future.
“A special mention must also go to the two young lads, Jamie Mellen and Callum Lees, who I thought were terrific,” Unsworth told evertonfc.com.
“I have to say they thoroughly deserved to be playing tonight because we trained with the first-team a couple of days ago and they were outstanding.”
Both Mellen and Lees are centre-backs and Unsworth’s comments suggest they both have very bright futures at Goodison Park.
Everton continue to develop some of the most exciting young players in the game and you only have to look at their current first-team squad to see that manager Roberto Martinez is not afraid to give youth a chance.
Mellen is currently 17 and Lees is just 16 and they are two more players well worth keeping an eye on in the years to come; especially if they are already holding their own in Everton first-team training.
