Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has praised former teammate Gylfi Sigurdsson helping Iceland qualify for Euro 2016.

Vertonghen also congratulated Kolbein Sigthorsson, his old Ajax teammate who currently plays for Nantes.

The centre-back also noted England's qualification for the finals, confirmed with a 6-0 thrashing of San Marino. He included Ryan Mason and Harry Kane in his message.

Sigurdsson was sold by Tottenham to Swansea City a year ago, and his regular starting place has only helped his international form.

He scored a crucial penalty at the weekend to give Iceland a momentous victory over the Netherlands, who after losing to Turkey last night, cannot qualify for Euro 2016.

Vertonghen's Belgium took a step closer themselves to reaching the finals, with a late win over Cyprus last night, gaining ground on Wales who could only draw with Israel.

Their chance of automatic qualification hinge on Wales dropping points in their next game away to Bosnia, with Chris Coleman's final game a simple task at home to minnows Andorra.
