Players from Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City were all involved for Belgium this weekend.
Belgium got a much-needed 1-0 victory against Cyprus on Sunday with Chelsea star Eden Hazard scoring with just four minutes of normal-time remaining.
The Belgium side was full of familiar faces from the Premier League, with Hazard joined by his Chelsea teammate Thibaut Courtois, Tottenham Hotspur duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Vincent Kompany, Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini and Liverpool’s Christian Benteke.
Vertonghen had a moment to forget when he hit a free-kick effort that is being branded by some on social media as the worst ever seen, but the Tottenham star did better at the other end of the pitch, helping Belgium to a clean sheet that brings them ever closer to an automatic qualifying spot for next summer’s tournament.
Belgium’s victory means Wales need one more point from their remaining matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Andorra while Marc Wilmots’ side also have their fate in their own hands.
Liverpool striker Benteke was taken off at half-time, replaced by his young Reds teammate Divock Origi, and it will be interesting to see how both strikers perform at Anfield this season and if they can ultimately form an effective partnership.
How Liverpool could have done with Benteke filling his boots with Manchester United just around the corner, but that was not to be, with the former Aston Villa star putting in a below-par performance.
