French fans absolutely rip into Arsenal's Olivier Giroud on Twitter after poor display

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud's display for France was criticised by fans.

Olivier Giroud has not had a good start to the season for Arsenal, and is under increased pressure due to the club's failure to sign a striker and injury to Danny Welbeck.

It just got a lot worse.

The striker was selected from the start for France's international friendly with Serbia last night, having been picked for just two minutes off the bench against Portugal on Friday.

He was given 62 minutes before being hauled off for Karim Benzema, wasting his chance to impress.

This was summed up by a perfectly, and quite exquisitely laid on pass by Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann to leave him with a must-score one-on-one opportunity.

And he screwed it wide.

The miss did not go down well in France, with supporters already sceptical of his record for Les Bleus, which now reads 10 goals in 40 appearances.

This includes just one goal in his last nine matches, and the miss was the last straw for several fans who began mocking him via social media.

A trend began among supporters to start naming strikers they would rather see start up front than Olivier Giroud - who had six shots on the night, and only one on target.

It began logically enough with Manchester United new boy Anthony Martial, or Swansea City's in-form forward Bafetimbi Gomis, a fair shout.

Yet when Stephane Guivarc'h and El Hadji Diouf (despite not even being French) were named, it began to get silly, with fans even touting Susan Boyle, and French president Francois Hollande as preferred choices.

It is probably for the best that Olivier Giroud avoids social media for a while...
