Fans react on Twitter to Vertonghen's performance for Belgium

Belgium won 1-0 against Cyprus on Sunday but what did fans think of Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen's contribution?

Tottenham Hotspur duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld both started for Belgium in their vital Euro 2016 qualifying match against Cyprus on Sunday evening, with the two Spurs centre-backs reverting to their more unfamiliar roles as full-backs for their country.

Belgium ultimately secured a 1-0 victory courtesy of a late goal from Eden Hazard, and in so doing they put Wales’s qualification party on hold.

The result also did Belgium’s own hopes of qualifying for next summer’s tournament the world of good as they are now four points clear of third-placed Israel with the top two teams going through automatically.

Along with Vertonghen and Alderweireld, Tottenham were also represented in the match-day squad by Nacer Chadli although the winger did not get off the bench.

Of the Tottenham players that did feature, it was Vertonghen who generated plenty of chatter on social media during and after the game, with one memorable free-kick failing to trouble the opposing goalkeeper in entertaining fashion.

But at the opposite end the Spurs defender did his job well and can be proud of his efforts.

After the match we took to Twitter to see what fans thought of the Tottenham player’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
