Report: Sunderland see reported Tottenham and Aston Villa target Jordan Pickford as long-term number one

Goalkeeping Gloves

The England under-21 stopper is currently on loan at Preston North End.

It was reported by The Sun this morning that both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur were keeping tabs on young Sunderland goalie Jordan Pickford.

The 21-year-old, who recently made his England under-21 debut, is currently out on loan at Preston North End and is catching the eye with his impressive performances in the past few weeks.

The Sun report that both Villa and Tottenham have sent ‘spies’ to run the rule over the player, with a potential move in the summer seemingly possible.

However, it is now being reported that any attempt to sign Pickford would fall on deaf ears.

The Sunderland Echo are today reporting that The Black Cats see Pickford as a potential long-term option between the sticks at the Stadium of Light.

The report claims that Sunderland believe that Pickford has the ability to go on and become the first-choice stopper at Sunderland and that his loan spell at Preston is meant as something of a character building campaign ahead of Sunderland giving him the nod.

That leaves Tottenham and Villa fresh out of luck if they were genuinely keeping their eye on the player, with an exit seemingly off the cards.

Sunderland fans will certainly hope that the best laid plans in front of Pickford come to fruition.
