The new Manchester United player suddenly has a big reputation to live up to.
Martial made headlines around the world when he completed his initial £36million (fee reported by the Mirror) move from AS Monaco to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day, and now the player’s representative Philippe Lamboley has been speaking about the record-breaking move.
“They have made several offers in Monaco all of which were denied,” Lamboley said. “It was stressed in order for Anthony to leave Monaco because Manchester is a huge project for him, opportunities like this do not occur every day. We thank AS Monaco and Vadim (Vasilyev).”
United were expected to sign a new forward all summer long, especially when their manager Louis van Gaal waved goodbye to Robin van Persie, Angelo Henriquez, Radamel Falcao and then Javier Hernandez with time running out to bring in a replacement.
But few expected Martial to be that player, and now the pressure is on the young French international to justify his hefty price-tag.
If he is as good as United obviously hope, he could join the likes of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in Old Trafford folklore, but patience will be the key – something that such expensive players are rarely afforded.
