Brendan Rodgers should give Gomez a chance in his preferred position once Flanagan returns for Liverpool

The Liverpool teenager could become one of their very best defenders.

Recent Liverpool signing Joe Gomez has impressed since arriving from Charlton Athletic, starring at left-back in the first four matches of the Reds’ campaign, but in a recent interview with the club’s official website he made it clear he sees his future at centre-back.

“At the end of the day I see myself as a centre-back and in years to come that is where I hope to play,” the teenager told and yet there is a chance he may get his wish sooner rather than later.

After all, the 18-year-old has already showed a level of maturity that belies his age, becoming the undisputed first-choice left-back at the club surprisingly quickly after a string of brilliant performances in pre-season.

So why shouldn’t Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers give him a shot in the centre of his defence at some point this season?

After all, while Alberto Moreno has fallen down the pecking order he is still available if required, while Jon Flanagan’s return from injury cannot come soon enough for a Liverpool side that will be desperate to see the 22-year-old pull on a red shirt once more.

Flanagan did not feature at all last season and he is yet to do so this campaign, but he should return in 2016 and his versatility could ultimately allow Gomez to switch from left-back to centre-back.

Liverpool’s current central defenders may have something to say about that but Gomez has already proved how good he is in an unfavoured position, so imagine what he could do playing where he feels most comfortable.

It seems the future is very bright for the Liverpool teenager, and for the club who have bagged a bargain.
