Spanish press name Florian Thauvin as potential Pedro replacement at Barcelona

St James Park Two

The Newcastle United winger is said to be attracting interest from the La Liga club...but why would the Magpies sell?

According to a report from Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are interested in Florian Thauvin despite the Frenchman’s recent move to Newcastle United.

The La Liga giants are currently in the middle of a transfer ban but the latest report claims they continue to scout a number of potential signings ahead of the January transfer window.

One of those players is Thauvin, who has impressed since arriving at St James’ Park from Marseille last month.

He signed for Newcastle for a reported £12million (according to Chronicle Live) and he has already played his way into the Magpies’ fans’ hearts, putting in fine work against Manchester United and Arsenal and scoring one and setting up two more in a 4-1 Capital One Cup victory against Northampton Town.

The latest report claims Barcelona are seeking a replacement for Pedro, who signed for Chelsea this summer, and that Thauvin would cost between £14.6million and £18.3million.

But the truth is, having only just arrived at Newcastle and with a contract until the summer of 2020, this is one rumour to take with a hefty pinch of salt.

It would take considerably more than that to tempt Newcastle into business and at this early stage, Thauvin already looks like being one of manager Steve McClaren’s best signings to date.

So while Barcelona may be circling, Newcastle will surely bat them away without a second thought.
