England will expect to continue their so far faultless surge towards next summer’s European Championships on Saturday when they face Group E whipping boys San Marino.
It could be that qualification for France 2016 is wrapped up this weekend, with another convincing victory seemingly on the cards.
Three Lions skipper Wayne Rooney will be hoping to lead the charge, as he sets his sights on becoming his country’s all-time leading goalscorer – with the Manchester United striker currently trailing the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton by just one effort.
Rooney has enjoyed success against San Marino in the past, with England having plundered 31 goals in their previous five meetings with the sovereign state.
The first of those came during a forgettable 1994 World Cup qualifying campaign – with a 6-0 win at Wembley, which included four goals from David Platt, followed by a now infamous return date in which, while netting seven times themselves, England conceded inside nine seconds.
The two nations locked horns again en route to the 2014 World Cup, with Roy Hodgson’s side plundering 13 goals without reply over the course of two contests – with Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Jermain Defoe netting braces.
Their most recent fixture came back in October 2014, with Rooney and Welbeck among the goals once again in a 5-0 success at Wembley.
