Graphic: Newcastle United’s strongest XI now the transfer window has closed

Newcastle United made some interesting signings during the summer.

Newcastle United opted for a change of tact during the summer, bringing in talented youngsters with bags of potential as they seek long-term assurances.

The Magpies have often fallen into the trap of signing too many experienced players in recent years, preventing a team from staying together and building over a number of years.

However, since Steve McClaren entered the fray as the club’s new manager, Newcastle have scoured Europe in order to bring in top talent who provide benefits both in the short and long-term.

Chancel Mbemba and Aleksandar Mitrovic both arrived from Anderlecht, while the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum was met with widespread praise from supporters and pundits alike.

Results haven’t been particularly impressive, with just two points earned from their opening four matches, yet performances have been good considering the circumstances.

McClaren now has options to shuffle his pack and picking his best XI is a tricky proposition, though as per the graphic below, this is how we feel Newcastle should line up, assuming everyone is available.

In order to get the best out of Newcastle’s star players, a few sacrifices might have to be made at the beginning, and that involves new signing Florian Thauvin.

The 22-year-old is a wonderful prospect with bags of ability out wide, yet his inclusion could leave the Magpies a little open in midfield, where Vurnon Anita and Moussa Sissoko operate much more freely.

Wijnaldum has to play as centrally as possible, which could also impact the likes of Rolando Aarons, Grabriel Obertan and Yoan Gouffran, but that is the challenge which is at stake.

McClaren has alternatives at his disposal, and the beauty of having a big squad is that systems and personnel can be altered depending on form, injuries and upcoming opposition.
