Can had previously turned out 11 times for Germany’s under-21s but on Friday he was finally given the chance to impress for the senior squad, playing the entire match at right-back.
That was where Can shone last season for Liverpool, but so far this season he has featured in his preferred position of central midfield.
Can has been used relatively sparingly by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers since the summer break but over time he should become a regular starter both for the Reds and for his country.
United star Schweinsteiger also played the entire match as Germany overcame Poland 3-1 in Euro 2016 qualifying and after the game he had a special message for the Liverpool youngster on social media.
Along with a picture of the players celebrating in the dressing room after a vital win, the Germany skipper congratulated Can on his debut.
Interestingly enough the two players will go head-to-head when they return to domestic matters, with United welcoming Liverpool to Old Trafford later this month.
