Keown says Ogbonna was a match for Benteke at Anfield

Martin Keown was impressed with West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna’s performance at Liverpool.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, popular pundit Martin Keown stated that West Ham United’s Angelo Ogbonna was the best opponent Liverpool’s Christian Benteke has faced for some time.

The Hammers defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield in the Premier League last weekend, an incredible result considering that Slaven Bilic’s side headed into the encounter on the back of two disappointing home defeats.

It was a defensive masterclass from the visitors as they remained compact, stopped Liverpool from controlling the midfield and marshalling centre-forward Benteke out of the game.

The Belgium international striker possesses such power and ability in the air, but he came up against an inspired opponent in Ogbonna and Keown had nothing but praise for the Italian’s display.

“I thought Angelo Ogbonna was the perfect man to deal with Christian Benteke at Anfield and I’ve not seen anybody handle him so well in a long time,” the former Arsenal star wrote in the Daily Mail.

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, Ogbonna posted an impressive account in four key defensive areas as he kept the Reds’ attackers quiet throughout the 90 minutes.

It was a superb turnaround for the former Juventus man, as only one week prior to the Anfield encounter he found himself hauled off after just 35 minutes in a 4-3 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Whether that humiliation inspired Ogbonna to rally up his game is open to debate. For the most part, on early-season form he does appear to be quite a coup for the Easy Londoners.
