Watford summer signing Obbi Oulare compares himself to Liverpool striker Christian Benteke, days after Aston Villa rejection

Watford striker Oulare has compared himself to Liverpool star Christian Benteke, days after Aston Villa rejected the chance to sign him.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Obbi Oulare has compared his style of play to that of Christian Benteke, currently with Liverpool.

He said: “There’s a lot of players from Belgium in the Premier League. But I’m most similar in style to Benteke. He has shown what you can do over here. I’m tall and strong and want to use that to my advantage.”

Those are certainly words which will excite Watford fans, with Benteke one of the most feared strikers in the Premier League.

It also explains why Aston Villa wanted to sign the 19-year-old striker late in the window, before the Hornets swooped in to steal him away to Hertfordshire from his previous side Club Brugge.

The Sun reported that Villa were looking at the teenage forward, having lost Benteke to Liverpool earlier in the summer, and Oulare believes he is similar in style to the former Villa star.

He is a hulking presence upfront, and is well regarded for his physicality and heading ability, whilst also possessing the same under appreciated technical ability as Benteke does.

However, the Sun report claims that Villa decided against a move due to believing he is not suited to the Premier League, but Watford were willing to take the risk on Oulare, signing him on a five-year deal.

It remains to be seen if he can start to emulate his idol Benteke, but if he can, Villa may just rue believing he was not suitable for English football in a few months time.
