The pundit has been discussing Aston Villa's summer signings.
But the former Arsenal defender and BBC pundit has expressed reservations about three of Tim Sherwood's new recruits.
The pundit said as part of his 'Tackle Keown' session: "Of the players coming in, I’ve been impressed by Jordan Amavi but I’m not sure Jordan Ayew is quite as good a player as his brother Andre at Swansea.
"Giving Micah Richards the captaincy is a massive show of faith but he needs to be a bit more disciplined - he’s a centre-back now, not a right back any more and he can’t afford to go charging forward so often. Rudy Gestede is good in the air but is not nearly as effective as [Christian] Benteke."
Aston Villa fans will no doubt agree with Keown about Amavi, who has received universal praise for his energetic start to life in the Midlands.
Opinion will likely be mixed on the other three, however. Richards' rashness did cost Villa a goal when he slid in too early against Manchester United. But the skipper has largely also been praised.
Gestede, meanwhile, is still adjusting to the transition from the Championship and has started his Aston Villa career well. Indeed, stats prove he actually averages more won headers than Benteke...
Ayew is perhaps the one player fans may support criticism of. The 23-year-old has begun slowly at Villa Park and supporters are calling for him to be given time.
