Former top flight striker John Hartson told talkSPORT that he’s not sure if Liverpool have what it takes to force their way into the top four.
Hartson suggested that the best chance Brendan Rodgers’ team have of being in the elite European competition next season, is to win the Europa League in order to progress.
However, for Liverpool to do that, they may have to change the traditional way that English teams seem to judge the competition.
“Liverpool, they want the Champions League, they’ve got a great opportunity (in the Europa League) but will they finish in the top four? I’m not so sure,” he told talkSPORT.
Mentality needs to be right
There’s no reason why Liverpool can’t win the Europa League, especially after a season where the side have significantly improved their squad.
However, Rodgers needs to really believe and sense that the competition is an opportunity for the football club, rather than an inconvenience in relation to the Premier League.
Thursday night football isn’t convenient because of the small amount of turn around time before the weekend Premier League games, but that’s no reason just to throw the kids into the setup, arguably weakening the side.
Rodgers has been backed by some big sending and he needs to pay that back with silverware and the Europa League is definitely part of that, regardless of whether it’s the main priority for the club or not.
