West Ham United media round-up: Sullivan on Song, reasons for Jelavic signing explained

A selection of the latest news concerning West Ham United.

David Sullivan on Alex Song

Co-chairman David Sullivan has heaped lavish praise on Alex Song, who completed a return to West Ham on transfer deadline day. Speaking to the official club website, the chairman claimed that Song, in the first half of last season, was the best player ever signed by he and fellow co-chairman David Gold.

Sullivan said: “On his pre-Chistmas form he was possibly the best player we've ever signed.”

Song signed a season-long loan deal with the Hammers from Barcelona, although he is currently out injured and is not expected to be ready to play when the Premier League returns in a fortnight at the end of the international break.

Jelavic transfer explained

Sullivan also told the club website the reasoning behind West Ham signing Nikica Jelavic from Hull City. Jelavic has struggled in the Premier League for a number of years, and his arrival does not particularly strengthen the first-team. However, Sullivan has claimed that he and Slaven Bilic decided the Irons needed more attacking cover due to the injuries to Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia.

He continued: “Having brought in eight players already during the summer, we knew that our major focus heading into the final few days of the window was to bring in a couple of forward players as we have been depleted by injuries in that area of the squad. Even though Andy Carroll is close to making a first-team return, Slaven and myself decided that we needed more cover in the striking area and we are delighted to have secured the signature of Nikica Jelavic from Hull.”

Adebayor deal off due to strange circumstances

According to the Telegraph, Emmanuel Adebayor turned down the chance to leave Tottenham because of spiritual advice from his pastor. He was linked with making a deadline day switch to the Hammers, and was offered the chance to buy out his contract with Spurs to move on a free transfer. However, the striker rejected Tottenham’s offer on advice from his pastor, leaving West Ham to end the transfer window having not signed him.
