Former Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk has linked up with his Southampton teammates for the first-time.

Van Dijk completed his move to Southampton yesterday, after a transfer saga that rumbled on for much of the summer window.

The Dutch centre-back, 24, has today linked up with his new teammates for the first time, taking part in his maiden training session with the Saints.

Van Dijk is expected to take a role straight in Ronald Koeman’s first-team plans, having impressed so consistently whilst playing with Celtic in Scotland.

He managed over 100 appearances for the Bhoys in his two year stay with the club, and truly established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Scottish Premiership last season whilst playing under head coach Ronny Deila.

Due to his form with the Bhoys, a transfer was expected away from Parkhead this summer, and although the deal took until deadline day to be finalised, Southampton got their target before the close of the window.

Big things are expected of Van Dijk, and with the Saints agreeing to sign him, it is clear the centre-back must be talented. The South Coast club rarely get it wrong when it comes to transfers, and Van Dijk has done much to suggest he is ready for the step up to the Premier League.

He is already in training with the Saints just one day after his transfer, and many are keen to see the international break finished so the Dutch defender can finally make his debut for his new club.
