Newcastle reportedly failed in late bid to sign Ashley Cole

Newcastle United are said to have tried to tempt the AS Roma defender back to the Premier League on deadline day.

The news was later published online by, revealing that the former England international was the subject of a late bid from the Magpies as they sought to further strengthen their squad before the transfer window closed until January.

Cole is now 34 and he has not featured for Roma so far this season having been used sparingly in the last campaign, appearing just 11 times in Serie A and spending most of his time as an unused substitute.

Despite his age Newcastle were seemingly keen on a move but the latest report claims Cole rejected the chance to swap the Italian capital for a spell at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have impressed with their summer signings, bringing in the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Chancel Mbemba, but manager Steve McClaren could have done with a couple more additions on deadline day if not before.

As it is he must now make do with the squad already at his disposal while Cole’s future remains unclear with a year left on his current Roma contract and seemingly little chance of playing regularly.
