A select round-up of the deadline day news relating to Manchester United

So that is it…at least for now. The latest transfer window has slammed shut with Manchester United fans left wondering if it has been a good summer, a bad one or something in between.

For may it will be the latter, with United manager Louis van Gaal identifying and solving his problems at right-back and in the centre of midfield, while also bringing in the gifted Memphis Depay to add goal-threat up front.

But with time ticking down, what United fans really wanted was an experienced centre-back and a world-class striker, and neither of those arrived.

Instead, deadline day saw United spend an initial £36million on AS Monaco forward Anthony Martial (as reported by the BBC).

The French teenager may go on to become a superstar but considering United’s lack of numbers in the striking department, for now it is a big risk.

United also completed the signing of Newport County defender Regan Poole for an undisclosed fee.

The BBC reports that United signed the 17-year-old after he previously impressed on trial at the club.

And finally, the Manchester Evening News reports that Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas phoned United to ask if a deal could still be completed to take him to Old Trafford.

Alas it was not to be, with the David de Gea deal falling at the final hurdle and Navas remaining at the Bernabeu as a result.
