Manchester United signed a very expensive teenager this week so what did their fans think of the move?
Manchester United concluded their deadline day business with a £36million deal for AS Monaco forward Anthony Martial in a move that excited some and baffled others.
With Javier Hernandez, Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao all leaving the club in recent months, United manager Louis van Gaal was in desperate need of a new striker to play alongside or instead of Wayne Rooney, but Martial was not the name any fan expected…and certainly not for the price being reported by the BBC among others.
Still, it could yet prove to be a master-stroke if Martial develops as some observers feel he will.
Martial is predominantly a centre forward although he can play on either flank if required and that versatility is likely to come in handy for van Gaal this season.
During his time at Monaco the teenager scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in 70 matches in all competitions and last season he netted nine times in 35 Ligue 1 games.
Following the news that Martial had arrived we took to Twitter to see what United fans thought and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Martial won't be brilliant this season hopefully improves more and more as seasons go on.— Brad (@Mufc_Bkaye) September 1, 2015
I hope everyone stays patient with Martial, Rooney and Ronaldo were brilliant for a game then useless for 3 at that age— Stubbs (@Stubbs_86) September 1, 2015
Wow. Martial will wear the no. 9 shirt. Brilliant, we can't complain if he under-performs, he only has Falcao to live up to. #MUFC— W•I•N•N•E•R (@Winner_UTD) September 1, 2015
United have a brilliant balance of young talent in Memphis, Martial, Shaw, Wilson etc and years of experience in Carrick and Basti #MUFC— mrs depay(@mrsdepay_) September 1, 2015
Martial and Depay are great prospects. There are always negative vibes around young talents but I am sure they will do well.— Manchester United (@MUFC_linkup) September 2, 2015
Can't help but think that if any other club signed Martial he would be a "great signing with lots of potential"— Chris Underwood (@Frodochris) September 2, 2015
One thing is for sure, Martial will either be the next world class striker or United's biggest mistake. No two ways about it.— Troy Butler (@indietroy) September 1, 2015
Not signing an out and out goalscorer is a huge mistake from #ManUtd. Martial may have potential, but he won't get us 20 goals this season— Brad Sinclair-Jones (@bradsjones) September 1, 2015
